Zero-Knowledge Proofs Explained for Non-Cryptographers

Zero-knowledge proofs sound like science fiction: prove you know something without revealing what you know. But they are real mathematics with real applications, and they are foundational to POY Verify's privacy architecture.

The Cave Analogy

Imagine a cave with a single entrance that splits into two paths, A and B, which reconnect at the back through a locked door. Only you know the password to the door.

To prove you know the password without revealing it:

  1. You enter the cave and randomly choose path A or B
  2. A verifier waits outside and shouts which path they want you to exit from
  3. If you know the password, you can always exit from the requested path (unlocking the door if needed)
  4. If you do not know the password, you have a 50% chance of being on the wrong path
  5. After 20 successful rounds, the probability of faking it is less than 1 in a million

You have proven you know the password. The verifier learned nothing about the password itself.

How POY Verify Uses This Principle

When a platform asks POY "is this user a verified human?", the response is yes or no. The platform learns nothing about the user's identity, biometrics, location, or any other information. It learns exactly one bit of information: human or not human.
